[Strikes with Valor] Strikes with Valor and Gossamer Wing were perhaps an unlikely pairing to be found scrounging in the Umbral reaches of downtown together, but as it so often did with matters of urgency relating to the Caern — they’d been the first two Garou the Guardian had found after witnessing some strange lights that struck him as decidedly not right.
So then, for tonight two packs were combining together to investigate.
In his dire-wolf form, Strikes with Valor was a large creature with a tawny coat marked in patches with darker shades of black and brown. His large paws struck the earth heavily as he loped over the umbral-plan, lowering his snout to the ground and snuffling for unusual scents.
[Gossamer Wing] She’s fresh from the Bog, tapped off and feeling strong, though still feeling irritated and irritable. The Godi that smiles is not smiling, and people are noticing. It results in hours spent in the Caern too, doing… well. Doing whatever Godi’s do which searching for lost equilibrium.
Which is where the Guardian’s found her, and where they found Strikes with Valor as well, and together they are sniffing out the odd umbral sighting the Guardian’s pointed them toward.
Joss, not so large in her homid skin, is everything you would expect of a Fenrir in Dire-Wolf form. Large, Strong, Determined, dark fur and large paws, and heavy loping steps. He sniffs for unsual scents, and her pale blue eyes are lifted, searching for anything and everything that will seem to be off, that would have set the guardians on edge…
[Legendary] The pair of Garou have moved forth at the behest of Walking~on~Broken~Glass. He’d emerged amid the debris and scattered pieces, quiet and baring a vague smile, almost as if he knew more then you without the benefit of bragging about it. Much like his deedname would subtly suggest, there is no sound when he arrives and directs the pair of Garou to the North and a ‘shush’ sound that says without words.

…It’s a few heartbeats, begging for an irritable ‘What is it‘ from the pair, before it happens; a gout of sunburst yellow flame, spitting high amid the jagged lines of Chicago’s horizon, cutting through the swathe of ethereal buildings, pattern webs disintegrating in a spray of tiny flecks (at this distance). The sound is minimal this close to the chopping waters and whorl of Maelstrom but Walking~on~Broken~Glass seems adamant, even insistent despite his lack of words.

…and so the pair find themselves wandering the downtown streets of Chicago. In the physical, it is a bustling place of humanity; business and executive pockets adorn every street corner and length, spitting wares and shouting numbers, leaping out to offend the ears of the downtrodden or simple minded.
In the umbra, it is an entirely different sort of feeling: The Weaver seems to rule here, pulling together her fiercest webwork and crafting of the downtown core a paradise of stasis. Silence is the golden law, interrupted only by the smallest of clicking sounds as spiders move in militant demand from section to section of finely honed pattern web. Skyscrapers high overhead, have yet to be completed in their wrappings, years upon years of work going into their construction and years more yet to come before the antenna top of the half-transparent buildings are swathed in the Weaver’s embrace but…
…That’s ok. She has time.
The streets are more like paved glass here then anything else and the surroundings are a humbling sort of deaf that leaves each padded footfall, a bright and shimmering sort of thrum that reverberates back into the chest. The pair continue down the awkwardly quiet main street, seemingly the only two heartbeats for miles.
…Before something smouldering catches not too far ahead, impossible to miss: The glass at the next intersection is cracked and broken, as if something large had punched it’s way forward on many legs, cracking impact fractures through the surface of the road itself. The buildings to either side of this brutally straight path are scorched and…
….Dripping. Gouts and solidified sections of webwork have peeled off and cooled from some hideous scorch and burn, holes and gaping wounds appearing in the glossy silver and blue of the pattern web structures, crafting ashen black seams that glitter in the light of the electricity elementals screaming inside their street lamp prisons.
Thresher! They cry.
Thresher!
[Strikes with Valor] The scream of the electricity elementals has the Ahroun’s ears flattening back against his head, his maw drawing back to reveal two rows of glittering, razor sharp teeth. A growl erupts from the beast’s throat, rumbling throughout the Garou’s great form.
This, however, is not Strikes with Valor’s place of expertise. He was born to tear and shred in the protection of Gaia. Gossamer Wing was born with the knowledge of the spirit realm and so it is to her that the Child of Gaia at her side defers, his eyes turning upon her to hear her council as the spirits screech on ahead of them.

It is a thing of the wicked and wrath of the Wyrm, born of it’s War-Beast mind. Pay attention to the blades it carries on it’s belly, like scythes to the wheat, and the maw that sits upright, spitting yellow fire like liquid and bondage, little one…they are creatures of an old Grudge. Seeds of a corrupt fire long since forgotten it’s reasons for being…”

[Gossamer Wing] She flinches at the screams. Anyone who knows her, knows she has fostered a relationship with the elementals, the spirits of the city – creating friendships, creating bonds that have them rushing to her aid when she summons them, playing tag with the Chicago Wind, playing with the water sprites at the fountain, playing snap tag with electricity – she has done it all, and they have learned to love and appreciate the smallish Godi.
She aches with their pain, with their screams. It plucks a nerve in her spine, and forces a tremble through hisbo muscles, rumbling under her fur, her skin. They’re her friends and they’re hurting.
She shakes it off, forces it behind the wall of calmness she exibits on a daily basis, forces the stress of it away with a search of her memory.
[HT]Thresher. It’s a monster of hate, that devours everything in it’s path. It’s flesh -but with blades in it’s belly, and an upright maw that spits fire – that’s the yellow burn. It’s a creature of an old Grudge – but has forgotten why it exists. It eats to rebuild itself – and melts down what it can’t eat right up, so that it digests easily.
She looks at Strikes with Valor, and one can almost see the glee deep in the Fenrir’s eyes.
This? Is gonna hurt.
[Strikes with Valor] The Ahroun at her side ripples, fur and muscle augmenting as he changes into his Crinos form, his eyes turning at once toward the source of that brilliant yellow flame they had seen earlier as it again lights up the Umbral sky. Strikes with Valor listens to the Theurge’s words and were he in his human skin, one could almost venture that he was grimacing at the description of what they now faced.
Than we shall make it hurt in return.
He rumbles out, and begins to move toward the screaming elementals, their plaintive cries reaching even the Ahroun’s noble heart.
[Gossamer Wing] Nothing would please her more. She does not move to crinos, but chooses to remain in hispo. She also prepares for the hurt that will come – a force of will spent to ignore it, while she also grows green and warty and rather rank smelling as she takes on the skin of the Troll.
Now that’s attractive.
He begins to move, and she steps to the side, taking a flanking position as she readies herself for battle, speaking to the spirits as they pass in the language they call their own.

[Legendary] The pair begin their march into the wake of the Thresher’s path, nearly shoulder to shoulder as the smouldering heaps and bundles of melted webwork, that look as if they have been chewed, gnawed and masticated by some scissoring force of lateral jaws, tufts and salivary points jut from the mounds and folds of liquid gray and black to either side of where they walk…
…All the while, the path they follow, stands with puncture marks, heavy and vicious. Moving without detour, down the roads ahead, their surroundings growing more and more broken and cracked and melted away as they follow closer to the creature creating the mayhem. The spiders on the building walls and shelves of umbral structuring are spread thin to ensure maximum coverage of the damage control and yet the closer they get, the less of them there are…
…Until at last the pair sprawl across a small hill leading down into a broad intersection valley, where main streets collide and something akin to a War zone has erupted:
The Spiders have come to Battle, the buildings around them supporting the large weight of no less the three Hunter Killers, decked in various heavy ordinance and melee weaponry that sprouts from limbs with daggering precision. Each remains atop building roofs that are rapidly disintegrating beneath them, forcing scuttling steps backward even as broad cannons with turning turrets rip charges of spiritual ammunition down upon the Nightmare.
It stands well over Crinos height, a good half a Crinos body more, weight spread out in it’s lower half which almost looks as if it has been constructed from the legs and bladed weaponry of disassembled and shattered pattern spiders, blackened and sooty and dull. The congregation of parts, spits a dozen legs in a broad circle around it, thick pistons with rusted hydraulic joints, keeping it aloft, whilst the darkness between those legs is a living maw of ratcheting needles and snapping blades.
The upper half of the Thresher ends at where some might claim are the ‘Hips’ a fleshy pinkish white torso emerging from the metal lower half, a single undulating stalk, not unlike an obtuse neck, ending in a broad, eyeless mouth, that stretches forward, wide and dripping with orange bile that sizzles and crackles at the corners, dripping down into it’s metal parts with corrosive bubbles forming.
It lifts it’s maw forward toward one of the lurking spiders, spitting metal statis at it, bullets digging into it’s fleshy neck and vanishing alongside the holes they create, within moments. The maw spreads and a loud
Chugga-Chugga-Whoosh!
Sound, not unlike the metal grind of a massive steamwork clock, erupts, followed closely by a long and narrow gout of urine yellow fire that consumes a massive chunk of the building the spider is on. The structure’s integrity begins to collapse beneath the Spider’s weight and the Hunter is forced to cease firing in order to try and maintain it’s place…
[Gossamer Wing] Yummy.
Her only comment, as she takes in the massive thing before them, and the war zone that’s already been created. He is the Ahroun. He typically leads in battle, and this is where she turns to him for his decision. Do they stay and fight, scout, or fall back and wait for backup?
Though she does offer. I can call the Eagles. She can also call Eagle himself, and will do so if they choose the battle. A battle which she continues to watch, while waiting, listening…
[Strikes with Valor] The sight before them is overwhelming.
It is impossible and yet it is so, the so-called Nightmare stands under siege by the spiders, the Weaver sending in her own warriors to protect her as the Garou arrive, standing at the edge of the valley. For a moment, retreat seems a viable option, for it is a frightening prospect, leaping into that fray with so few Garou. And yet, and yet — the Ahroun stills, as if over-come with a sense of peace, of finality about his place in the scheme of the world.
He turns and looks long and hard at the Theurge standing beside him, and simply says: Call them, we may need their added strength if we cannot bring this monstrosity down between us.

[Gossamer Wing] She nods, once. ORder given, order carried out.
Across totem wings… Downtown. Now. Thresher. The urgency is there, and then she is silent. She expects that they will come if they are able, just as she would come running to the scene. She also centers herself and makes the call to Eagle, summoning him to their aid. He is always with them, he is always near.
He will come.
The calls made, she nods her hisbo head to Strikes with Valor. It is done..
[Strikes with Valor] It is done, she says and with a final nod the Ahroun turns back to face the scene of carnage below them, eyes narrowed against the searing heat of flame the Thresher billows out from what he can only imagine was its mouth. With a jerk of his head, the huge Crinos beast begins to carefully edge down the valley to gain a clearer picture of what they face.
[Legendary] The picture grows only more devastating in clarity:
The Thresher, a towering structure, half-metal and half flesh, swivels and turns with it’s many legs, cutting great furrows in the flesh of the downtown street, chips and chunks of beautifully woven patternweb, torn up like so much dandruff and sent heaving into the sides of buildings that are pooling blackish gray ooze, that rolls and folds down to the umbral floor.
The searing heat of that yellow flame, gushing from the broad amphibious maw, is capable of being felt even at the hundred yards separating the Gaians and the Thresher and yet it’s attention seems wholly oriented on the Hunter Killers that have it pinned in a triangular placement.
The next gout of flame eats up what is left of the rooftop the Spider is perched on, forcing it to scuttle one might be tempted to say ‘desperately’ for purchase, only for the folds of melting pattern web to finally give out beneath it, sending the creature crashing back into the midst of the Building’s gutted interior, legs and manifold weaponry akimbo.
The other two push closer to their building edges, weapons ceasing fire for a split second, smoke spouting from the many barrels, even as they whirl and click and re-orient on the dangerous form of the creature and begin to eat up belts of ammo once more, pumping static charges into the Thresher’s back.
A Roar and answering gout of Yellow spawns from it’s mouth in response, turning on the other two as the the Third H.K begins to pull itself slowly out of the mess of it’s former building perch.
[Dances on Fire] Time passes strangely in the Umbra so it’s hard to tell how long it takes before he arrives. Travel is weird too. You go one direction, end up in another. Who knows. But he arrives eventually. Trucking along in his massive hispo form, tearing up ground as he goes along. Two talens glow on the flanks of his fur. Matted with dried light brown mud that has spread out in a spiderweb of lines across his body. Wrapped itself down his legs and up to his neck. Shining with Luna’s glow as he approaches the oncoming battle. Only pausing as he crosses the things trail to turn and come charging up behind Joss and Art. Skittering to a halt and panting softly with his tongue lolling to one side. He’s arrived.
[Silence] Silence’s arrival is more mundane. Realmside, the Barracuda’s engine roars off skyscrapers and warehouses. The brakes screech as he brakes on a sharp right into an alleyway. The ignition dies. Lights go out.
A moment later the Fenrir presses Umbralside, pulling his gifts to him as he takes on his favored battle-form.

[Legendary] The Battle is fierce and yet seems to only display the sort of opponent the Weaver is up against and how it has been lasting so long within the Spider’s territory:
The Thresher swivels, delivering a bleeding gout of semi-liquid flame at the nearby building atop which sits a spider, obliterating it’s front section with such ease, that the roof beneath the Spider’s clicking feet melts and liquifies, sending the Hunter cascading into it’s innards, the blaze of a vulcan cannon’s turrets skittering off metal parts of the Spider’s legs and lower extremities harmlessly.
The last remaining spider atop a building fares little better either, surging forward to plant mechanized feet for the recoil, as it unloads it’s own impressive barrage into the creature, who seems to absorb the damage into flesh, other bits ringing off metal with only a marginally twitch of bouncing motion to reflect it having any affect on the Thresher itself. The Spider’s attention is not wholly fixed on the Thresher however, as an occular node atop it’s spherical head swivels and a secondary nozzle winds hard to it’s left, spitting a gout of metallic rain down toward the approaching Gaians…only to have it patter and scatter harmlessly against the cover they all seek.
…The last spider that had been buried first upon the Gaians arrival, extracts itself onto street level, weapons aimed up at the Thresher before it.

Lifting her enormous charcoal-furred head, Sinclair scans the area rapidly with eyes more the color of glacial ice than summer sky in this form until she sees the other Garou, some of whom are behind a car. She bristles with energy for a moment, a burst of spiritual effort, then Silence’s voice unrolls across the field. She is not a crescent moon, but she can hear the first order:

The Galliard’s howl arrives as Sinclair clambers across the edge of a rooftop, a path of rubble leading to the street below. Yet before her descent, a rippling cry pulls free of her throat and tears into the skyline above, surging into the spirits and souls of her fellow Garou. The howl dips into a low snarl, even as Joss’ own soft whispers and steady beat on the Drum, begin to swirl and coalesce around her, blooming wisps and elegant hands, translucent and frail, reach forward from the chest, neck, limbs and mid-section of the young Godi, ephemeral hands seeking out in the aether for the moisture and clutch of the Rust Elemental, slender gnostic limbs creeping into the web thick alleys between buildings, digging deep and pulling away thick clouds of brownish haze that hover above her head, flitting and dancing like a cloud of gnats an odd crumpling song playing throughout it’s depths.
Likewise, the rippling crackle of the Electrical elemental at Joss’ behest suddenly rises across her knees and bent legs, cradling the slender shape of Fenris’ priest even as it cackles in mad freedom, the sizzling aspect of a jagged face, appearing with a grin made of shocks and sparks, electrified gaze glaring down the street at Weaver and Wyrm. It arcs and forks around her body, never touching but ever close and raising the hairs across arms and neck.
Lastly there is the sudden eclipse of illumination as wafting winds cut through the street behind the Gaians, a deafening War-boom ripping free of a proud throat. Eagle; majestic and massive, settles upon the edge of one of the buildings opposite to where the Galliard perches, blackened feathers stretching out through brown highlights, a feral eye cast forward to regard the battle below, even as claws crush and crack the pattern web beneath them like so much paper within the vice.

Eagle presides over his chosen children, the Godi’s call meant to invite him to War and yet the Great Spirit does not seem interested in the Fight beyond observation. He trusts in his children, accepted and all and is neither eager nor disdainful of their efforts. Eagle’s Chosen bare no quarter. Show no mercy. This is his path…
The electric elemental snaps forward, shrieking broad strokes of white and blue light, leaving an azure trail for the eyes to follow even as it plunges hard amid the crackling and wavering limbs of the Thresher, seizing joints and biting blades in it’s lower body.
No sooner has this occured, then the cloud of rust given spirit, wafts upon a breezy current, following in the ozone stench of the Elemental’s wake, only to alight, almost tenderly, across the metal socket and plates surrounding the fleshy middle of the Thresher. A bellow of pain erupts across’ the maw, curling lips, as the rust spirit begins to corrode away the connection between the Spirit’s metal and organic parts.
The spiders are torn asunder under strikes and added blows from the slightly larger Garou, panels and plates ripping free and cables and diode guts ripped clean apart as the mighty Eagles and their two Packed but Separate allies, Warcry and Strikes with Valor in his Heart, pick them apart with almost methodical grace. Teeth snap and rip free metal sections, claws digging out furrows until the guts of the creatures are brought to bare, their own scissoring limbs and blasts performing little against the hides of the Gaians.
Soon enough one of the Hunter Killers is driven into a heap, even as the Garou collectively turn on the Thresher who has been bathing Silence in a near steady stream of yellow napalm. Yet even as the others turn, a great cry rips free of Eagle, wings snapping outward and from within the puddle of sloughing yellow, emerges the Eagle’s alpha, a growling monstrosity of Fenris’ Legends and Proven Wrath.
With an almost negligent flick of his head, the great Modi lunges forward, the rest of the Gaians not far behind, leaping astride the legs and piston driven limbs of the Thresher’s lower body. Cries and screams and growls of War erupt from throats, as the Thresher is literally pulled apart by grasping Gaian hands and the vicious Rage that blesses them.
When it is done, Silence is not among the gathered aronud the Thresher, but instead up the street some ways, the casual dissection of the last Hunter Spider made under his claws and fangs.
…Leaving behind the charred storm of crackling fire and melting pattern web to greet the Warriors as senses return to the present…
The weaver would be sending forces soon. A small army of Hunters, Strand and Pattern spiders to assess the damage and begin repairs, but Tonight. This night, amid the Weaver’s domain…

[Strikes with Valor] And then all the Garou broke into a rousing chorus of ‘We Are the Champions’ and hugged.
Silence shed a tear.
[Dances on Fire] Trophies were taken. Slabs of spirit metal from armored hides dangling pieces of electronics. They will carve with claws later. Throw on the wyrm pole. After the battle he’s quiet and calm and not really tired, but battle weary. He does what needs to be done and gets out of there before the spiders show up to repair things and crystalize all the damaging elements, before reweaving them as needed.
[Silence] Errant sparks and currents still jitter through the last Hunter-Killer at Silence’s feet. His teeth are red, not with the blood of the Spiders but with his own — his gums and muzzle cut on the sharp edges and torn steel that every bite wrought.
The Modi whuffs out once, twice. Then he turns on his haunches, all that muscle and all that weight moving with a smooth, loose-jointed ease that was very nearly grace. He seizes one of the limp legs of the thing, his neck arching under the strain. A Hispo is too heavy to lope as a Lupus does, so he paces back, step by deliberate step, dragging the pile of scrap metal with him.
Napalm is still smouldering on his fur. He ignores it, trusting in the protection of Luna and Hyperion alike to shield him from harm. When he arrives where the others are, he drops his burden in a clatter of steel and titanium-alloy.
“Take what trophies you will. But save me a piece of the Thresher’s armor.”
And totemphone — a vastly different voice: ‘n ‘m really goin’ ta Storm Hammer now. You fuckers better not call me back ‘gain.

[Gossamer Wing] When she stops, when it’s over, when it falls – she is exhausted, completely drained. She has nothing left. She settles to the ground, and slowly bleeds back to her homid form, rubbing absently at the itch on her forehead, her eyes halfmast while she catches her breath.
By the time Silence arrives, however, she has forced herself to a stand – using some broken bit of something or another to stable herself before he snaps over the Totemphone. She just meets his gaze, evenly, a moment, then lift her chin, and turns to begin gathering something else entirely.
Not Trophies. She had made a bargain, and she will keep it. Through the carnage and broken bits, she searches out the broken lanterns and gathers glass pieces, holding the edge of her skirt to make a pocket, and loading every shard she can find into it. She ignores the cuts on her fingers, on her thighs where it pokes through the cloth and stabs her thighs, and the blood that stains her skin – the elementals had done their part, she will do hers.
Only when she’s found every last piece of glass she can determine was part of the lamp posts, only then does she grab a couple pieces of the armor – what she can drag with one hand – and start the long ass walk home.
