[Kyle Velener] want me to start?
to Rory O’Bryne
[Rory O’Bryne] She has commandeered the pingpong table again. Not to play the game, but instead spreading out her tools and all of the pieces and parts of the project she’s working on. Nothing is exactly recognizable as of yet, as she’s completely dismantled what it began as, to start piecing together something new.
She works quickly, methodically, slender pale fingers nimble as she messes with the small pieces, gears and gizmos, wiring and structural pieces too. Her brow creases with concentration, the kiss of bright-red curls masking the expression with the duck of her head.
There is no denying the feeling that permeates the air about her, the rage that boils within her blood. She is born True. To those who can tell, she is also born pure. Such a shame, really. No matter. This is a safe haven, she’d been told, and as such she simply continues working.

[Kyle Velener] Drying his hair off, Kyle wanders into the main area and looks around. Tonight he was wearing a loose long sleeve shirt and jeans. Unusual for sleeping in but for him it was usual. Around his neck is his trusty black leather collar. Spotting Rory he wanders over to check out what she was up to. Keeping his distance so as not to disturb or annoy her in anyway. Saying nothing as he sips at a juice in his hand
[Rory O’Bryne] Her brow furrows as she tests the gears to see if they’re moving correctly, only smoothing when she decides that it is. When Kyle comes over, she looks up and over at him, meeting his gaze briefly with her own pale green eyes before they drop slightly in respect, and turn back to the project she’s fiddling with.
She seems to pick up her tools, the pieces by instinct, even as she looks over at him again. Her voice is soft, and smooth, as the woman of few words offers a “Hi.”
[Kyle Velener] Gives a casual wave in greeting as he sips his juice. His eyes taking in every move she makes. His wet black hair making his pale complexion stand out even more. Swallowing he speaks in a voice that’s barely above a whisper. A slight hint of pain flashing across his face as he does.
“Hi there…..looks interesting…”
[Rory O’Bryne] She is no less pale, her skin kissed by freckles, her heritage obvious in her skin tone and coloring – she has Celtic blood, and a lot of it. She grins a little, hiding it with a duck of her head as she gestures absently at the bits and bobs. “Maybe. It wight mork out all right.”
Yes, she says it just like that. She doesn’t seem to notice that her words get mixed up, that her letters switch and form some sort of verbal dyslexia. She hears it correctly in her head. “Elder gift.”
[Kyle Velener] Nods as he listens and watches. Sipping his juice he doesn’t comment about the letter switch. After all the world was a wide and diverse place. Tilting his head he tries to make out what she was making.
“What does…..it do?”
Another sip of his juice as he smiles at her.
[Rory O’Bryne] She lifts a hand to push the curls back behind her ear, though they fall free again soon enough. “It’s a lamp.” Of course it is. It doesn’t look anything like a lamp. At least not at the moment.
She tests the gears again, and then grabs some parts and starts to assemble it. “Middle moves. Motates roon phases in stand, here.”
She shows him without plugging it in, how the lamp stand has been modified so that in the center of the stand, the gears rotate a small moon, mimicking the lunar phases as it passes under the light of the bulb when it’s on above it. A regular lamp otherwise – but embellished to make it unique.
[Kyle Velener] Gives a thumbs up as looks at the lamp. Almost as if he could see exactly what she was referring to. Tilting his head as he leans a little closer.
“Very intricate….Will it….work without….power?”
[Rory O’Bryne] She shakes her head. “No. It peeds nower.” She touches the wiring, and nods. “Wiring is easy.”
For her, maybe. She seems comfortable working with all of the parts, as if she’s tinkered with things like this all her life. She seems intrigued by the idea of making it work without power though. “If like a clock, would cind up. For now though, plugging in works.”
[Kyle Velener] Nods as he thinks on things for a moment. Then grins as he holds up a hand as if to say he’d be back. Quickly he heads out of the room and a few minutes later comes back in with a sketch book and pencil case. Grabbing a chair he sits at the table and starts to draw something. Looks like the lamp but he’s drawing other bits. Showing her what he’s done. It’s his attempt at understanding what she was doing. A question mark indicating the moon display as he missed seeing that part of the assembly.
“This close?”
[Rory O’Bryne] He sketches, and she leans over to look at it, and nods with a little grin. “Yes.”
She smiles at him, and gestures absently to all the little pieces and tools and what not. “I tinker, when I net gervous. Have to meet the elder soon.” She looks up and toward room one, as if she could see through the wall, through the door, to see if the Elder in question is actually in his room. She hasn’t built up the nerve to approach it, or him, just yet.
[Kyle Velener] “Understandable…..”
Sips his juice as he tilts his head and looks at the room she was gazing to.
“Sure you’ll….be fine…”
Gives a grin and thumbs up as he looks at her
[Rory O’Bryne] “Maybe.” She smiles a little, as her fingers continue to work on her project. “Hear te’s hesty sometimes.”
Then she realizes she hasn’t even told him her name. “Oh! I’m Rory.” Her face flushes for having forgotten, being so involved in her work that she’d neglected good manners.
[Kyle Velener] “Think all…true are….like that….”
Snickers as he gives her a wink and a thumbs up. Sipping his juice as he nods.
“Nice to….meet you….Rory…..I’m Kyle.”
Offers a hand in greeting for her. Something about him just makes it easy to trust him.
[Rory O’Bryne] She lifts a hand and rubs it against the line of her jaw. “We are.” agreement. He offers his hand, and she takes it in hers. Her fingers are delicate, light, pale, and seem somehow fragile, even though there’s the sense of strength beneath the skin, a strength she doesn’t exert. She does not do what some would, showing dominance. She feels none. He is kinfolk. He is above her in station, though she bred true.
“You stay here too? How lany mive here?”
[Kyle Velener] His hands are a little rough. Not so much from physical labour but his life style perhaps. He has that well worn look in his eyes as if he’s seen a lot in a short time.
“A dozen….I think….It depends….on when….you stop…in I….suppose.”
He keeps a sense of respect towards her in his actions. Avoiding direct eye contact and other smaller things that all kin are taught to show towards those of true birth.
“You….staying here?”
[Rory O’Bryne] She nods, slightly, and turns to gesture. “Noon Rine.”
She has a roommate she’s never seen, never met, though she’s only been here for a couple days. She really hasn’t seen many of them at all. Maybe she just is here at the wrong times, maybe she is lucky – or unlucky. Hard to tell.
[Kyle Velener] Nods as he chuckles. He knew how that was. He wasn’t always around and he rarely Mirela but that’s not unsual for his tribe.
“Ah….room ten…here…..Nice to….meet you…neighbour.”
Finishes his juice as he moves some of his hair from his face.
[Rory O’Bryne] She smiles, that same little almost smile that she tends to hide with a duck of her head, the slide of her curls brushing her cheek and drawing the attention away from her expression. She’s not used to being spoken too for long periods of time. So many get frustrated with her inability to recognize, to hear her own disability.
“You too.” She looks up at the clock and sighs though, and starts putting away her things. Another night and she should be finished with it. Hopefully before she has to face the elder. “Is late… bime for ted.”
