[bad wolf.] Ground Rules
Alright, it seems every other ST has some of these so I figured I should have some as well. Here goes:
1. This is a combat orientated scene, which means that yes, there is a chance your character could die. I don’t pull punches in my STing when it comes to the bad guys so if you’re not up for the idea, I won’t be dismayed if you decide to bow out now.
2. This is only my second time STing a combat scene so please bear with me if I’m a little slower than you’re accustomed to rolling dice and have patience.
3. Questions should be directed to me in the chatroom, not IMed please.
4. As a general rule, one of my posts should equal one of yours, if I need to post again for you, I’ll let you know.
5. And lastly, enjoy yourselves! This is meant to be a fun time!
So, go ahead and post yourselves in, guys and let’s get this show on the road!
[Gossamer Wing] Patrols. It’s always patrols. Despite the suggestions that she spends too much time in her attic doing heaven-knows-what, Joss is fanatical about doing her patrols, keeping the Eagle presence well known in the Eagle Territory.
And now? It’s time for ice cream. Because it’s a whole 39 degrees outside, and there’s no wrong time for ice cream. Which is why this particularly happy Godi is walking away from the Cold Stone Creamery, a waffle cone in her hand, happily munching away on some sickeningly sweet concoction of Peanut Butter Brownie Blast.
Some days, it doesn’t get any better than that.

[Going Down] Indira doesn’t know Chicago well yet. She’s been running up and down the region close to the Brotherhood and near Chinatown, and now during her patrols helping Callie in Oz Park she’s become familiar with that area, but she doesn’t know it nearly so well as Detroit. Chances are she never will (she grew up there after all) but it’s important to know one’s own home grounds.
It’s important to know where she can retreat to, what places need help and guidance, where the Blight stretches to in particular. Once she knows the Rite of Cleansing, that latter knowledge will be helpful indeed.
The Ahroun rumbles down the sidewalk. Most people avoid her, both because of the Rage she exudes and because she so obviously looks like she belongs in a gang (or to a ganger): cargo pants, a dark hoodie over several other shirts, heavy black boots, hair the color of pink lemonade and her facial piercings glinting in the dim light from the streets.
[Mickey] Mickey is slide shuffling dance stepping his way down the pavement. He’s wearing a pair of old school headphones, the kind that arc up right over your head, big pads enveloping his ears, muffle bassing a beat into his head, isolating him from the cries and calls and sires of Cab Green, putting him into his own acoustical universe. Eyes hidden behind aviator shades, leather jacket collar flared around his scrawny neck. He’s wearing a white shirt under the jacket that reads in black stenciled letters: I kill everything I fuck. Skinny pair of black jeans hug a fabulous ass that almost, almost compensates for the sallow, hook nosed and strangely effeminate face that leers at all those who glance his way.
Moving and grooving, a dip in his hip, a box of condoms in one hand (Magnums) and a brown paper bottle in the other, Mickey walks the streets of Cab Green, intent on some destination.
[Curata] Patrols.
He isn’t exactly patrolling. It’s more like watching the neighborhood, feet planted a part by a foot. Back braced up against the rough brick outside a store front with his arms pressed against his ribs, hands tucked into the pockets of his jeans as he’s watching Joss exit the icecream parlor with a cone in her hand. His head shakes as he pushes off the wall in one motion, long legs building up his stride quickly to catch up to her as he paced himself up beside the little Fenrir.
[Daydream] Watching. Listening.
Sometimes that was the best way to learn. There was very little that daydream eyes might miss, for all that they so often seemed not to be paying attention to anything at all. The last time she’d been in this part of town, Cassidy had been dancing in the street. Today was a different day, and behind it, different motivations. The fae-like creature sat perched atop a two-story building, sitting as still as a statue as she looked down upon the neighborhood below. Shadows hid her from view, and although at one point her attention perked up (there was the familiar sight of Joss with her ice cream, and that proved a tempting lure), she did not attempt to climb down from her hiding place just yet.
Because there were others here tonight. Strangers. So for now, she held very, very still.

[bad wolf.] Cabrini Green isn’t exactly what you’d call a thriving community. It’s the area where the homeless sleep under benches and aren’t picked up or herded out of sight by the Police — mostly because the Chicago PD don’t bother a great deal of the time about keeping this public housing region all neat and tidy for the tourists.
What tourists?
Nobody with an once of sense would deign to spend a great deal of time here unless they had to and there’s very little worthy of a candid holiday snap as you drive past. It’s all boarded up windows and gang-owned street sides around these parts. Welcome to Cabrini-Green, there should all but be a sign somewhere that says it, where all your life belongs to the destitute, the poor and the unpleasant.
Still, still.
There are some beacons of good left in the neighborhood, there are those who are willing to lend a helping hand to the starving and penniless. There’s an overpass about two streets away from the patrolling Eagles, about a street away from the hip-dipping Bone Gnawer that runs close to the river itself. Cars scuttle across it at all hours of the day and night but far beneath it, set against Graffiti strewn pillars is a small take out deli. It’s a portable van, nothing more — one of the old kind that you’d more regularly see selling ice creams to children during summer, with a little roll up window in the side and a fold out menu.
Brenda’s Bites, the faded writing on the side marks it as, but what it really is, is a down and outer middle-aged woman who comes and feeds the homeless, who gives them free leftovers and brings them extra blankets to survive the freezing nights during winter. She’s a Gnawer through and through, Brenda, a Kinfolk who’d lost her mate years ago but never stopped wanting to help.
A good egg, some had called her.
In the dark, in the night, Brenda is doing what she always does when she opens the little door of her van with a bag of garbage. It’s quiet tonight, and the crackling bins used for warmth aren’t surrounded as usual by her clientele — as a matter of fact, Brenda is suddenly noting, it’s too quiet. It’s below freezing, there should be a line already waiting for hot food.
[and there is, she just doesn’t realize what’s on the menu tonight]
A pair of yellow eyes blink in the darkness; and a rumble sounds, feet padding closer and closer until — “Oh!,” she’s relieved, it’s just one of the wolves, come to say hello. Mangy looking fellow, he must be starving. “It’s you lot, you scared me, you–”
The wolf was very close by now, and, as her heart kicked into her throat, Brenda noticed he was not alone. Other eyes joined from the surrounding darkness and the Kinfolk backed up.
She screamed, she screamed on and on until she couldn’t.
[Gossamer Wing] Curata falls into step next to her, and she grins up at him, offering her cone so that he can have a bite, all friendly like. She’d felt him coming, of course – that pressure of pack that curls along the spine and warms up between the shoulder blades and settles in like home. She nudges him with a hip, all silent gestures, and comfortable touch, and then…
then, with the cone halfway to her mouth, with the thought of ice cream cold and dropping and sweet and chocolatey dancing in her eyes… the screams begin.
And don’t stop.
She doesn’t hesitate. Truth is, she rarely does. She simply takes that last bite on the fly, drops the cone (…dammit…) in the bin and is hauling ass, flying dreads and fluttering skirts, that direction. Because it’s awfully close to home. And it’s her duty to respond.
She doesn’t have to say anything to her packmate. She knows he’ll follow…
[Going Down] A scream rends the frosty night air.
Indira has sworn to Maelstrom that she will not seek Glory, that she is in Chicago to guard and protect, to build and heal and make things -better.- She does not know that this is the Eagles’ territory, or at least has not taken note, and is not counting on them to protect whoever is screaming right now.
The Bone Gnawer, too, darts off in that direction, short pink hair flying backwards as she runs, body held low and feet drumming out a heavy rhythm against the broken sidewalk. She follows her ears, she follows her gut, and when she arrives her cheeks are flushed, pupils dialated, fingers already curving into the shape they will assume when they grow into claws as she changes forms.
[Mickey] Mickey is listening to some great music. He’s heading somewhere close by, booze and condoms in hand, with no intentions of getting into trouble. However. Two people sprint past him, through the intersection and toward the overpass just over the way.
He pauses, quirks a brow. Those people were moving fast. Which means either they’re heading toward a great party, or there’s something wrong. And since they weren’t looking over their shoulders? It meant they were heading toward the problem. So either way, that’s some kind of excitement.
Curious, Mickey shucks the headphones, lets them hang around his shoulders where they continue to blare their tinny music, and picks up his pace, running but not yet sprinting after the others.
[Curata] It is the child that leads the warrior, the tall dark one that becomes her shadow even as he walked beside her, shaking his head with a murmured “Nay” in refusal to the offer of a taste of the ice cream cone. His attention snaps away, to view the scenery around them, watching as he always does.
He doesn’t react to the nudge at his hip, merely glances down at Joss with a raised eyebrow and a small curl of his mouth, before his attention is pulled away again. He seems about to comment on something but it doesn’t come out. Eyebrows drawing into a deep furrow as he looks towards the bridge.
The screaming.
Joss is the first to go into flight, abandoning the sweet treat into a waste basket and the tall Fianna is soon on her heels.
[Daydream] In the nearby distance, someone screamed. Cassidy craned her head around to try and see what was happening, but saw only the shadows and multiple figures running towards an overpass, where the sound was located.
For a moment, she hesitated, agile muscles tensing and quivering with the desire to move. Instinct demanded one action. Curiosity demanded another. Empathy was ultimately the deciding factor, and suddenly she darted out of her shadowed hiding place and… jumped. The elfin girl landed on the ground in a crouch, hair fluttering around her face like golden silk. Then she too ran towards the van, though she remained slightly behind the others.
[bad wolf.] Like the saviors they are, they respond to that heart-rending, spine-chilling scream that cuts through the winter’s night like an iron hot blade slices through ice. The Garou come running, and the closer that they get, the worse the sensation grows, itching behind their eyes and prickling their skin.
It felt like Rage, but nothing close to theirs.
This was a blacker Rage, a gross malignancy that was eating away at the very oxygen they breathed. Suck it in deep, and feel the noxious urge to gag it right back up from your lungs. Beneath the overpass, all is abruptly silent again; the trashcans have all been knocked over so that ash spilled across the dirt and sparks darted around the dying embers. Only one remained lit, near to the farthest pillar; it sent light darting off the side of Brenda’s van.
The door was swinging in the breeze off the river, smacking lightly against the lock; as it opened wide the Garou can see a bloody slash raking across it toward the handle as if someone had attempted to open it but been torn away before they could get inside.
The slashes resembled that of a human hand.
The smell of blood, of death and something else, like rot was pungent. There was something here, and it was watching them very closely.

[bad wolf.] You can feel the sense of dread still in the air. The sense that you’d just missed whatever had done this to Brenda. And worse still, you can feel eyes, more than one pair, trained on you as you stand there in horror. It’s familiar to you, in the way all wrong things are.
All things stained with the stench of the Wyrm.
And — is it your imagination, or can you hear the sounds of chewing, coming from the other side of the over-pass, where the shadows are still impenetrable?
to Going Down, Gossamer Wing, Mickey
[Going Down] There are the sounds of chewing, of teeth splitting apart yielding flesh and cracking through bone. Indira has not yet had a chance to encounter some of the Wyrm’s horrors: she is young, fresh out of her Rite of Passage, and glimpsed a fomori once. A bane on another occasion. Everything else is left up to the tales of the Galliards and her own imagination.
Regardless, she can sense that there’s a fight coming, that it might be up to her to avenge a death at the very least. This is not seeking Glory. It is righteous anger, Rage fueled by the wolf and tempered by the laws of man.
She isn’t about to go chasing after that sound in her more fragile homid form, though. There’s cracking and popping again, this time as her bones shift into the shape of a massive dire wolf, one with grizzled brown fur that is a mix of colors: reds here, a few threads of white on the face and chest and paws, blacks and greys.
[Stam + PU, +1 for Hispo]
Dice Rolled:[ 4 d10 ] 2, 5, 6, 8 (Success x 1 at target 7)
[Gossamer Wing] She can feel it. They were seconds too late and there’s nothing that can be done about that – however, there is something that can be done about the rest. The rest that she can feel – that she can feel are waiting on the other side… in those shadows…
All things are stained with the stench of Wyrm…
She dips her hand into the godi bag at her hip and with a mental Take these if you need them! to her packmate, and she’s slapping three talens in his hand. His choice to use them or not – she simply knows and accepts he is faster than she is…
Joss glances around to see her’s there, who’s come to the call, the screaming that she could swear still echoes, and she points toward the shadows, and then moves toward the side – taking a flanking position from that of her packmate, even as she hardens her will, to resist what will surely come. [-1wp, resist pain active]
And, as Going Down has decided as well – Joss Shifts, on the move. Instantly… [-1 rage – shift to hispo.]
[Mickey] Shit on a brick stick. Mickey slows, the forms of Joss and Curata before him, the darkness of the overhead before them all. The sense of wrongness congeals about him, removes all urge to party and replaces it instead with the sweet surge of adrenaline, the falling out of his stomach, the hair prickling up along his arms and the nape of his neck, the sudden tearing off of his shades and shucking old school cd player, bottle of booze and box of condoms.
When he hits the next step he’s grown a foot, broadened in frame and by the third he’s a hulk monster, his leather jacket and jeans gone, his white shirt shreds and tatters that falls from his body. The next step sees him falling forward to land on his front paws, huge and vicious in Hispo, though not nearly so massive as some, his fur a dark tawny mix of black, browns and even tufts of bronze. Sniffing, scenting, he sends forth a low chuff to the Garou before him, alerting them to his presence even as he pads forward to join them, and then on, to investigate the darkness beyond.
[Daydream] As she drew near to her destination, Cassidy’s feet slowed. And finally… stopped.
Her body was alive with a kind of feral energy. Something that belied the predator that lurked somewhere beneath such non-threatening human skin. There was a slight frustration at the lack of clarity brought on by her current form. The shadows were too dark. The scents too dull. Sounds, too quiet. Still, she heard and saw more than the others, and with a slight flare of nostrils (distaste, the expression indicated – the air tasted foul), she lifted an arm and pointed to the shadows on the other side of the overpass.
“Joss,” she hissed softly. “There.”
[Gossamer Wing] (ah! slow shifting allowed – keeping mah rage. :) )
[Curata] This isn’t the first time he has seen Indira when it came to trouble. They have stood side by side before. He acknowledges her form immediately. The Fianna automatically – out of habit – shaking himself out of his human skin as he shifts down through his forms until he stood massive and red, in his hispo form.
It was more of a reaction to Indira doing the same thing. Black lips peel back along his upper jaw, exposing sharp white teeth as a low hum growls in the back of his throat. His eyes drawn towards the shadows where he feels whatever caused this to watch him.
His nose twitches against the rancor. Powerful cords of well-defined muscles rippled and coiled under his fur, a tail flickers as he looks back to Joss once as Daydream speaks her name and points to the direction they knew it was in.

[bad wolf.] The Garou, all of them, can sense the taint in the air — it’s strong enough for that. Some, like Cassidy are even unfortunate enough to catch a glimpse of what lay further up the area beneath the over-pass. Cars are still passing overhead, their head-lights wash across the great stone pillars, reflect graffiti; an old forgotten shopping trolley, an overturned bin, stray shoes and weed [the Wyld, she was here too] and a pack of starving dogs pulling apart a body.
Wait, what?
The headlights wash over them. They are a pack of four by count, and all seem to be skinny, starving things with patchy fur and protruding ribcages. Their pelts vary in shades, from mottled brown to black to dirty white, they all have glowing, unnaturally bright yellow eyes and they lift their muzzles as they scent the approaching Gaians; blood dripping from their maws; teeth baring; stained with coppery red blood.
Their Kinfolk’s blood.
Brenda lies in the midst of them, and its clear the moment their eyes start to adjust to the darkness that there’s no help for her now; she’s beyond feeling pain and given what these animals have been doing to her, that seems a very good thing indeed. A tiny blessing from Gaia.
Except — as the dogs straighten and twist to face the Garou, breaking apart and taking formation [attack positions] a horrible realization strikes the Garou. These are not stray dogs at all — they’re wolves. And as the horror of that penetrates, it gets worse, for they too change forms, growing larger until they are all four Crinos shaped monstrosities.
They snarl in turn.
This was their kill, they did not want to share.

[bad wolf.] In these final days of War, I fear it is going to be the burden of the children to stand and fight in place of us, wearied and aged warriors who have seen our lives pass before us. – unknown Adren Ahroun
It is indescribable to human beings to define what takes place here, in the darkness beneath a city’s bridge. There are the snarls and snapping of many jaws, of flesh being rendered from bone as the wash of lights flashes over them and highlights the precious seconds of combat where it all pivots on a knife-edge.
Flash.
The pack of fallen Wolves approach, bloody-mouthed and ravenous for the taste of Gaian flesh.
Another.
The two chosen of Eagle leap to meet their foes, as unafraid as their mighty totem who is with them always, with them now, right down to their final moments [Curata and Joss can both glimpse him, as darkness threatens to swallow them for the last time, a clear call from a circling Eagle, winds spread, waiting for them…calling for them to come home…]
Heckles the Wyrm bravely faces down his opponent, even as the salivating wolf leaps at him, massive jaws snapping at his shoulder, tearing out a chunk of the Gnawer’s muscle and spitting it aside as if to keep for a morsel after he’s done bringing the No Moon down. Valiant as he is, the Ragabash is no match for this sort of brutality; this lack of caring whether one lived or perished as long as they got a meal.
The Wolves are fearless; and they’re starving, always starving.
But, in the end, they will lose this fight.
They will lose it because of the courage of the two Fosterns who fight with tooth and claw as if it were their final battle [for they do not know that it is], because of the little Bastet that rips out the throat of the final Wolf and stands over him, panting and triumphant, even amidst this bloodshed, his lifeblood dripping from her claws. They will lose because of the Ahroun known as Going Down, to snarls and snaps at the wolf who dares to rip into her hide.
But, oh.
The battle is glorious for the Fenrir Godi; she single-handedly rips out the stomach of a wolf, and leaves him yelping, crawling on his forepaws and struggling to stand. She plants an enormous paw atop his skull, the mighty Spirit Talker — and proves her worth as a child of Fenrir; snapping through his spinal cord.
The battle is equally awe-inspiring for any who glimpse Curata, the unstoppable Fianna who is killed and rages back to life only to help slaughter the pack of tainted wolves anew. The son of Stag lives up to his heritage, right until the final moments of his life when the light finally leaves his eyes for the last time.
They will both be welcomed as heroes.
Songs will be sung of their deeds.
They, along with the Gnawer Kinfolk — have been avenged, and shall always be remembered.
—
In the aftermath; when all finally grows still once again, it is the Bastet that sole retains her feet, standing in ground made bloody.
They had won.
They had won, but at a terrible cost.
[Daydream] She wasn’t built for this kind of thing. Others may have been. Stronger, more war-like tribes. But the small, agile feline that suddenly erupted out of the shadows, swiping at the wyrm-tainted garou that had just murdered her friend, was nowhere near as intimidating as the company she presently found herself in. Lips curled back to reveal a glint of teeth and a curled tongue as she hissed angrily, and her hands(paws) slashed so quickly that they were practically a blur, but there was no force behind the blows. They shredded through fur and left the Spiral beneath intact.
And everything happened so very quickly. The sole standing Gaian beside her managed to do what she could not, but then the ahroun herself went down. With a final hiss, and one more vicious swipe, the delicate bastet made for an anti-climactic conclusion, but a conclusion nonetheless, as the final Spiral’s blood fountained out from his neck, and he too fell to the ground.
Don’t look.
Her mind quaked. Already she could feel the fractures splitting open. Voices whispered in the background, chanting the song of Cahlash and the dirge of the fallen. Cassidy looked between the two remaining life forces, fallen at her side, and went first to one, and then the other, bending down to rasp her tongue across the open wounds, sealing at least some of them. Enough, anyway. Enough that they would both awaken and be able to get themselves to safety.
It is more than most could expect, from her kind. But it was not enough, ultimately, to make up for the loss of a friend.
Then the voices came in full force, and she huddled beside Joss’ prone body, shivering, her eyes nearly opaque as they focused on something that wasn’t really there. Something entirely inside of her own head.
[Going Down] The scent of blood is overwhelming as she awakens in the alleyway, roused by some odd chant, by something that verges on song. When Indira lurches back to her feet her eyes are glazed with confusion; they blink steadily at the cat (a creature of old stories).
And then the Ahroun realizes that she is the only one who is left standing, other than this cat, the stranger who joined them in the fight. Who was summoned, the same as she was, by the screams of dying Kin. Who now crouches beside the fallen body of someone Indira has only seen at moots, whose name she has heard spoken of with respect in conjunction with the Eagles.
She is hoping that she is not the only Garou left. A few desperate huffs at Mickey’s body dispel that particular fear, but it returns her attention to Curata and Joss. Far more experienced Garou who by all rights should be the ones bearing her body home tonight. It is not the first time the unfairness of War has struck her and it will not be the last.
A scream summoned them to the kill tonight. A long, reverberating howl of mourning guides them home.
[Daydream] The ahroun howled for her fallen comrades.
Cassidy did not. Could not.
Cats felt grief silently, and alone, as that is how it was meant to be. Still somewhat locked in the throes of some private madness, she looked down as Joss, then nuzzled against her prone body. When she looked up at Indira, she simply held the garou’s gaze for a silent moment, then she bolted off into the shadows, claws scrabbling against brick as she disappeared up atop some building again. Within moments, she’d be gone. Leaving the garou to bury their own and dispose of the tainted fallen.
